We’re big fans of getting the kids involved in growing their own food here at Meals Our Kids Love! Research shows that children eat more fruit and vegetables if they’re actively involved in growing their own, whether it’s tomatoes, peas or lettuce.
So I couldn’t resist picking up these little gems at my local supermarket this week. Waitrose has extended its Woodland Friends range to these grow-your-own-pots. Perfect as Easter gifts, you can choose from miniature strawberries, cherry tomatoes or sunflowers. There’s a little adventure featuring Whizzy the Bee pollinating your garden with each pot, as well as ideas for activities inside the sleeve like making a garden label.
Ours are currently sitting on the kitchen windowsill waiting for the weekend; my daughter is hopping in impatient anticipation for when we open them and plant the seeds. She has her eye on the strawberries of course, but I’m hoping that growing her own tomatoes will encourage her to give them a try too.
Each little pot costs £5, and has everything you need to start growing. The instructions look easy enough – you sprinkle the seeds over the soil, cover with more soil, add water and place in a sunny position until the first shoots appear. You then transfer to a sunny spot in the garden. That’s where it might get tricky for us, having all kinds of wildlife in our garden who’d fancy a nice juicy strawberry or two, but I’ll keep you posted on our progress – follow us on Instagram to see how we do.
We only review things we truly genuinely love or feel our readers would like to know about here at Meals Our Kids Love! We are never paid for our reviews nor do we receive any kind of incentive. From time to time we may be sent a free sample. If we choose to publish a review of a product we have received a free sample for, we will always let you know by stating this either at the top, bottom or within the post itself.
