As you might have gathered from this week’s Friday Dish, we’ve been busy in the Meals Our Kids Love kitchen with a whole bunch of new products for the kids to taste and test.
Among them, this new range of dairy, wheat and gluten-free ready meals for children – Kids’ Kitchen.
There are seven chilled ready-meals to choose from: Sausage Casserole, Salmon and Cod Pie, Lentil and Butternut Squash Pie, Beef Lasagne, Moroccan Chicken, Cottage Pie and Chicken Korma. Currently the only UK brand in the country to offer ready-prepared meals that are dairy, wheat and gluten free, Kids’ Kitchen is aimed at taking the stress out of family mealtimes, especially if you have children with allergies.
Launched in 2015 by founder Kirsty Henshaw after the success of her range of allergen-free adult ready meals, Kids’ Kitchen is already proving popular with parents of children with allergies and food intolerances.
One thing I noticed immediately was the sell-by date on all the meals. Each chilled meal has a shelf-life of 35 days – that in itself is a bonus when it comes to stocking up on meals for the children. The meals can be either microwaved or baked in the oven – again that makes life easy.
So what did the kids think? We were sent samples of all seven meals so we were spoilt for choice. The serving sizes are good, large enough to feed a primary school child. The kids really liked them – my daughter liked the lasagne best and said it had a good strong flavour. My son loved the chicken korma the best and actually cleaned his plate (a rare occurrence). They didn’t try the salmon pie as neither of them are too keen on fish. I had a taste of all of them and will say that they are good on flavour and look appealing too.
Ready meals have received a bad rap in recent times mainly because of their high salt content. I had a look at the nutrition labels on each of the dishes and salt content in all of them is very low (below 0.3g per 100g) so, again, another positive.
Says Kirsty, “Reacting to an obvious demand, we set out to make naturally healthy and ‘free from’ food convenient, delicious and affordable to everyone. The response has been overwhelming, with stockists of Kids’ Kitchen the length and breadth of the country. Moving forward, we continue to champion the healthy food movement, encouraging families to take positive steps to a healthier lifestyle.”
Kids’ Kitchen meals are available at Asda and Morrisons, RRP £1.95 per 250g pack.
