The sun held out for our first ever MoKL @The Kitchen Table event – coffee, cake and lively conversation with some of our lovely friends.
The theme of today’s gathering was how to make family mealtimes a success, and the ideas, tips and recipes came thick and fast. We loved Jo’s idea of using puff pastry to wrap leftover spaghetti sauce to make little pasties. And Sarah’s tip to pulse all the shepherd pie ingredients (minus the mash) together to remove all visible traces of veg.
Things we didn’t know: nutritionist Rowana told us that the digestive process starts even before we put food in our mouths as we look at the food we’re about to eat; the more appetising it looks, the better our digestion will be. This explains why presentation is one of the keys to getting our children to eat well (and why so many of my past meals for the kids have been rejected before they’ve even been tasted!).
Guests sampled some MoKL kitchen faves – Avocado & Chocolate Smoothie; Elderflower & Maple Syrup Cordial No. 3 and Luscious Lemon Drizzle Cake – and ooh-ed and ah-ed over cute Bento box accessories from EatsAmazing. Conversation ranged from what to give as an after-school snack at pick-up time, to ideas for meals that would serve three children all of different age groups.
At the end of the morning, everyone got a goody bag with MoKL recipes and ingredients to make their own Avocado smoothie, while two lucky ladies each received an Ellyn Satter book: How to Get Kids to Eat and Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family.
All in all, a lovely morning. We’re already looking forward to the next one.
