We all know by now that typical fruit juices and juice drinks for children can come laden with some not so healthy ingredients – we’re talking about you sugar. And while we’d all love it as mums and dads if our children would ask for nothing more to drink than good old-fashioned plain water, the reality can be very different. So it’s always good to see a new product that addresses that, in this case a juice drink for children that’s delicious but also low in naturally occurring sugar.
But then Nurture Fruity Water + is more than just a new juice drink – it also claims to boost children’s immunity. Enriched with seven different vitamins including a smattering of Bs, vitamins C and D as well as calcium and zinc, it also includes an intriguing ingredient called Wellmune® Beta Glucan. A natural ingredient derived from baker’s yeast, the noise about Wellmune® is that it can help reduce incidences of common childhood illnesses such as colds and respiratory tract infections.
Created by parents
Nurture Fruity Water + is the brainchild of Lucie and Derek Sanders, parents of three young children. They wanted to create a drink that not only tasted delicious but was healthier than those they found on the supermarket shelves.
Explains Derek, “Nothing nurtures better than breast milk and all baby formula producers strive to replicate it. However, there is a gap in the market after children stop breast-feeding and formula, as there are currently no functional juice drinks with added nutrients available for children from 1 to 5 years. Nurture Fruity Water+ has been formulated to support children’s immunity and be part of a solution to help busy, on-the-go families stay healthy.”
Packaged in bright and fun 200ml pouches, Nurture Fruity Water + has less than 1 teaspoon of naturally occurring sugar per 100ml and is available in two flavours, Cherry and Strawberry and Orange and Pineapple, both made from 45% natural juice and 55% water. As a mum, I’m a big fan of pouches as they easily slip into lunch boxes and school bags, and as Nurture Fruity Water + is school approved there’s no problem with these being taken in your child’s packed lunch.
The Nurture Fruity Water + website is also very fun and colourful with mascot Firsty the Elephant and Firsty TV and the Firsty Club.
More about Wellmune®
I was intrigued by the claim that Wellmune® can reduce the incidence of common childhood illnesses like colds, and what parent doesn’t want that? Further digging reveals this claim is based on a the results of a study in China published in January 2016. The study group was small, 156 children, and the children were only monitored for 12 weeks, so while it’s not exactly conclusive it does show promise. You can read more on the Wellmune website.
The Taste Test
The real test of Nurture Fruity Water + is whether children will actually drink it – and for that to happen it needs to taste nice! So how did our kids’ panel find it? Our taste testers ranged in age from 2 to 14 (so okay, the teenager is slightly older than the target market but he didn’t want to be left out!).
Here’s their verdict:
“I really liked it. 9/10”
“Yum, it tastes really fruity. 9/10”
“I like the orangey-pineapple taste. 8/10”
“The elephant is really cute. And I like the taste 8/10”
So, the verdict is in. A big thumbs up from kids.
