In this week’s Friday Dish: highlights from The Baby Show last week, including the fantastic little Babycook and these beautifully soft bibs. Plus, next week is National School Meals Week – find out all about it.
This little gadget had me completely mesmerised at The Baby Show last week. The Béaba Babycook Duo is the complete baby food maker – it steams, cooks, blends, reheats and defrosts all in one, making a complete meal in 15 minutes. But what I think is really nifty about this is its two compartments – meaning you can prepare two different meals at once. Make a vegetable puree for baby on one side while making lunch for your older child on the other. Or you can cook a main meal on one side, dessert on the other. Versatile!
With just a few quick adjustments you can steam veg, then puree it. Or you can make mini cheesecakes by crushing a biscuit on one side, while mixing a filling on the other. You can also use the Babycook to defrost or reheat a meal and to get you going, it comes with its very own recipe book.
Babycook has a lovely, sturdy and clean design just like all the other beautifully-designed and covetable products in the Béaba range. I loved the Babycook so much I almost wish my kids were babies again just so I could buy it. But according to Marie-Lorraine from Babycook, it’s not just for baby food; the Babycook is also a great way to steam vegetables for the family meal. The Babycook is available at various outlets including Jojo Maman Bébé, John Lewis and Lakeland, priced at around £149. Visit the Béaba website for more details and stockists.
Babies’ bibs have come a long way since the rough towelling, plastic-backed versions you knotted around your baby’s neck. These Bubba Bibs are incredibly soft and gentle on baby’s skin and even more importantly, they stay soft even after washing and tumble drying. They’re also thick enough to absorb spills without soaking through to baby’s clothes.
We love the bandana style and with 150 bright and colourful designs to choose from you won’t be stuck for choice. We bought three of these at The Baby Show for friends with babies and a soon-to-be new mum.
Special deals on the Bubba Bib website at the moment include two bibs for £5.50 and 11 bibs for £19.60 (including post and packing).
National School Meals Week
Next week is National School Meals Week (NSMW), an industry led celebration of all that is great about school meals – from the companies who supply school kitchen equipment and of course ingredients and food, to the school chefs and dinner ladies who work tirelessly to make sure our children are fed. For a number of children in the UK, a school lunch is their only hot meal of the day, which makes hot lunches an even more important feature of our schools.
Without making myself sound positively ancient, school lunch “in my day” was actually pretty good. Some of the desserts are still my favourite to this day (Chocolate Toothpaste to name one).
Times have of course moved on and school caterers have to be even more adept at serving meals that cater to allergies and food intolerances. You may have a strong opinion on your child’s school meals – good or not-so-good. But if you think your school or school cook deserves a special mention or your kids love their school lunches then NSMW invites you to tweet about it using the hashtag #schoolmealsshoutout. Or you can visit the website to see how your child’s school can get involved.
Every Friday we share the best of the week’s food and nutrition finds in The Friday Dish: what we’ve loved, what’s inspired us and what’s revolutionised our family mealtimes. We only review products, websites, books and recipes we absolutely love and want to share with our readers; we do not receive payment in exchange for Friday Dish reviews.
